The princely state of Orchha was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela chief, Rudra Pratap Singh, who defeated the Mughal governor of the province and established his rule over a part of Bundelkhand.
Resting on the banks of river Betwa and surrounded by a cluster of rocky outcrops in Chhatarpur District, Orchha is known for its spectacularly carved palaces. This place is known for its remarkable terracotta temples. Some of these are very complex and colourful, notable for their intricate architectural features.
This is a great destination to visit, especially if you are looking for something different. It has the beauty of the Taj Mahal without the crowds, and you can spend some time exploring the surrounding areas as well.
It’s charming, impressive, and a great place to take the whole family. After exploring the temples, children will enjoy dipping their feet in the pool at the Orchha Resort and playing unique local sports like kite-flying.
Orchha is a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern cities. Its streets are lined with beautiful temples, untouched by time or pollution. We enjoyed wandering these pathways, talking to local children, and eating delicious Indian food!
India’s largest state has received some good news. The two cities of Gwalior and Orchha, located in India’s Madhya Pradesh, have been added to the list of world heritage sites under UNESCO’s The World Heritage Cities Programme.
