Bhopal: The City of Lakes

Bhopal is a city in central India, and it’s one of the greenest cities in India. The Upper Lake and Lower Lake provides great views, and Van Vihar National Park is home to lions, tigers and leopards. Bhopal is a city located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Numerous lakes and forests surround it. It has become popular as it provides an array of fun activities and entertains its visitors every year.

Within 141 square kilometres (54 sq mi), this city spread over a flat plain and located near the southern edge of the Vindhya Range on the northern side, and the Som River runs through the city. This lake city is home to two lakes, an artificial one known as the Bhopal Lake and a natural one called Dal Lake. The former lake was constructed under Begum Shah Jehan in 1699AD.

One of the oldest artificial lakes in India, the Upper Lake is one of the most scenic places in the city. Locally referred to as Bada Talab or Bhojtaal, Raja Bhoj built it in the 11th century.

Lake Pichola and Kamla Park offer a magical experience of nature, offering a stark contrast to the hustle-and-bustle most people are used to. Not only is the lake surrounded by beautiful royal gardens with impeccable architecture, but it’s also the main attraction for Bhopal, being a common tourist spot. It is genuinely an ideal vacation destination.

2. Van Vihar National Park

The Van Vihar National Park is one of Bhopal’s most popular tourist destinations, if not in India. It is home to more than 50 exotic animals, ranging from porcupines and wild boars to blackbucks and blue bulls. Place numerous mounds of exposed volcanic rock throughout the park providing shelter for many birds and butterflies.

Timings: 7 am to 7 pm

Entry Fee: INR 15 for Indians per person and INR 200 for foreigners.

3. Sanchi Stupa

When it comes to visiting the most visited monument in India, the Sanchi Stupa is on top of everyone’s list. A landmark of Indian Buddhist architecture, the Indo-Greek and pure Buddhist elements incorporated in the building attracts millions of tourists each year.

The Mauryan king Ashoka undertook the task of spreading Buddhism in India. The construction of the Sanchi stupa by his wife Devi was one such attempt.

Timings: 8:30 am to 5:30 pm

Entry Fee: INR 10 only for Indians and INR 250 only for foreigners.


By Air:

Bhopal is the capital city of Madhya Pradesh and lies at the heart of India. Bhopal has an international airport, which serves both domestic and international flights. You can easily travel to cities like New Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Indore, Chandigarh, Raipur, etc. Jabalpur from Bhopal airport. Taxis can take you from the airport to the city centre in less than 30 minutes.

By Train:

Bhopal is a train station on the mainline. Some trains also go to Bhopal from Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai.  Local buses and auto-rickshaws are available.

By Road: Here available a well-structured road system. You can choose your common vehicles for road transport.

What is the best time to visit Bhopal?


October to February is apt for making a trip to Bhopal. The tour plans in the plain will be best and memorable in moderate temperature during this month of winter.

The temperature here is a minimum of 25 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius.
